Being a Source of Light

October 13, 2016

Once a week, members from the STRIVENT community get together to discuss the Book of the Month.  This month, we're reading Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl.  This book is densely packed with vivid imagery of the concentration camps Victor was forced into during WWII along with an extremely compelling theory of how to find meaning in life, even in the most heinous of circumstances.

Tonight, we discussed how one finds light in the darkness.  More accurately, we discussed how one can choose to become a source of light in the darkness.  Victor Frankl chooses to act in alignment with his values and belief systems even in the midst of the worst environments ever to take place on the face of the earth, Auschwitz.

"We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread.  They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way."

I submit to you that although you may not be in a concentration camp today, there may be areas of your life where you suffer.  How can you bring light to that area?  How can you be light in the darkness?  Can you shift your attitude and see the suffering as exactly the impetus you'll need to be the person you must in your next great challenge?

I am thankful for the amazing conversations that take place in this space each week, and I hope all of you can find the strength to be a source of light today.
